the sun city girls are one of my favorite bands. i found out about them because of Rat Bastard (or Frank Falestra) who is the miami noise guru. he saw my band play in a dark room and then walked up to me and said “hey man that stuff was alright it kinda reminded me of this band i used to hang out with and record alot, in their early days.” he was talking about the Sun City Girls, so it was no coincidence that when Be Your Own Pet was picked to play at ATP festival in ‘06, mr. Rat Bastard and I found ourselves standing next to each other front and center, waiting for Sun City Girls to take the stage. and it was AMAZING they played so many great songs like “black tent” “uncle Jim” “without compare” etc.
so here is one of my favorite SCG songs taken off of the exceedlingly rare and ahead-of-it’s-time sounding LP compilation, 1981’s AMUCK: greetings from pheonix arizona!
BOBBY SANDS is a boogie that is a very early SCG song and it really shows that when the girls wanted to stop all of their highly-evolved noise-jazz noodling sound explosions, they could just as simply play, SOME OF THE OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL.
